What is a hydrogen fuel cell?

A hydrogen fuel cell is a type of generator that produces electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. Fuel cells generate fewer pollutants than the production of energy from fossil fuels and are gaining attention as an eco-friendly energy source. This is primarily because their byproduct is typically water.

How Does Hydrogen Fuel Cell Work?

Hydrogen fuel cells create electrical power through a chemical process. Inside the fuel cell, hydrogen gas is fed into the anode, and oxygen (from the air) into the cathode. A catalyst at the anode separates hydrogen molecules into protons and electrons. The electrons are directed through a circuit, creating an electric current. Meanwhile, the protons move through the electrolyte to the cathode, where they combine with oxygen and the electrons returning from the circuit to produce water and heat—the only by-products of the process.

What Are the Uses of Fuel Cells?

The versatility of hydrogen fuel cells allows for a wide range of applications, making them a pivotal technology for the future of energy:

Transportation

Hydrogen fuel cells have become a game-changer in the transportation industry. They are used in automobiles, buses, ships, trains, and even aircrafts, each benefiting from the clean, efficient power that fuel cells provide. They offer a compelling alternative to battery-electric vehicles, with advantages such as faster refueling times and longer ranges, all while emitting only water vapor.

Portable Power

The compact and lightweight nature of fuel cells enables portable power solutions for devices ranging from laptops to mobile phones. This can significantly reduce our reliance on batteries and the environmental impact associated with their disposal.

Other Applications

Fuel cells find critical applications in powering base stations and cell sites, which are essential for the seamless operation of our mobile networks. Additionally, they play a significant role in distributed power generation, telecommunications, water heating, portable charging stations for small electronic devices, small heating appliances, and electrochemical sensors.
